The B-Kats evolved when the group decided to pursue their dreams of a band. According to Bernard Jenkins, the group’s founder, all three members have music in their veins and could not be fulfilled while pursuing other interests. Jenkins spent a lifetime on the road serving as band leader for the late Johnnie Taylor, playing backup for other greats such as Little Richard, ZZ Hill, Betty Wright, Albert King, Bobby “Blue” Bland to name a few. His musical resume’ includes playing with gospel Grammy nominees such as the Williams Brother, Jackson Southern Aires and others. From the time as a youngster when Jenkins sneaked into Shirley’s Café and sat in a corner listening to the band, The B-Kats were already performing. Years earlier, when his grandfather and father played the guitar and harmonica…The B-Kats were performing. |
It would logically follow that, Corey Jenkins a fourth generation musician would need to become a part of a group called The B-Kats. Corey, Bernard’s son as a young child, had a love of music that could not be denied. He had to have something to beat on. So a make shift drum served the purpose. Corey attended Jackson State University, Jackson, Mississippi as the number 1 pick out of 500 Sonic Boom entrants, long enough to realize that The B-Kats needed to emerge as a band. A gifted drummer, he plays with a feel, zest, ease, and natural talent that belies his young age. Keith Collins, recording artist, bass player and third member of the trio, is a lifelong musician and founder of his musical group, the Popsicles. He too has music in his blood. His parents were managers of various gospel groups and he developed a love for music and entertainment at an early age. Collins has held various day jobs, including creative services director for Fox 40. However, it is his love of music and performing that makes him a B-Kat.
